Yahoo, Disney, and ABC television are expanding their relationship in a new collaboration that may give Yahoo’s news and magazine entities the boost in credibility they need.
Today, Yahoo is announcing that its Screen video platform will start airing more content from Disney and ABC. Additionally, the media companies are kicking off a new collaboration. Starting on Monday, March 16, ABC’s Good Morning America will feature a new series called “Yahoo Your Day.” The new program segment will add Yahoo editors and digital magazine writers to Good Morning America’s regular program.
As a result of the deepened partnership, Yahoo will add more Disney and ABC content to Yahoo Screen and Yahoo TV. The company plans to show clips from television shows like Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder, Grey’s Anatomy, Pretty Little Liars, Jimmy Kimmel Live, and Dancing with the Stars. The company will also experiment with featuring exclusive previews and interviews with stars from some of these shows.
The enhanced partnership is a sign that Yahoo is laying out the welcome mat for traditional television media companies looking to migrate to the Internet. And with an increasing number of channels and television content creators moving to the web, like HBO, Yahoo is certainly positioning itself at the right time.
However, it will take more than an embedded relationship with Disney and ABC to beat out its competitors. Both Amazon and Netflix have already made serious inroads collecting content from a variety of sources, and both are already creating their own original content. In this way, Yahoo seems to be lagging behind. However, if the company can create a soft landing pad for media companies that have been slow to make a leap to the web, it may be able to create a viable place for itself in video content.
