A trademark filing released today for Samsung’s upcoming “Galaxy Gear” product provides new information about the company’s plans to produce a smartwatch gadget.

Samsung first confirmed that it was working on a smartwatch back in March, months after rumors that rival Apple was working on its own. Smartwatches, along with Google Glass and exercise tracking devices like FitBit, are part of a new category of wearable gadgets that have yet to hit the consumer market.

As for the trademark filing, Samsung’s “Galaxy Gear” product(s) isn’t limited to just smartwatches. Here’s the description from the filing itself:

Wearable digital electronic devices in the form of a wristwatch, wrist band or bangle capable of providing access to the Internet and for sending and receiving phone calls, electronic mails and messages; wearable electronic handheld devices in the form of a wristwatch, wrist band or bangle for the wireless receipt, storage and/or transmission of data and messages and for keeping track of or managing personal information; smart phones; tablet computers; portable computers.

While the focus is clearly on watches, Galaxy Gear could be expanded to include smart accessories that go beyond surfing the web and checking messages. But for now, we’ll have to wait and see just what Samsung has planned for the future of wearable tech.
