Snapchat today announced a major change to a feature that has been core to the social app since day one: You no longer have to press and hold to view a snap or a story. Instead, all you have to do is tap the screen.

This is a big move for the company, and shows it is starting to grow up as a social network. Snapchat has finally removed a requirement that was always a little bit annoying, but unique and necessary for a new form of sharing. In short, users have figured out Snapchat now, and they no longer need babysitting around the concept of ephemerality.

“This means no more tired thumbs while watching a several-hundred-second Story … and a little getting used to for anyone who has been Snapchatting for a while,” Snapchat explained today. “We think you’re going to love it!”

That’s not all that is new in today’s update. Snapchat has gained an Add Nearby friends feature. In short, you can add Snapchat users to your list based solely on proximity. If you’re chilling with one or more people who you don’t have on Snapchat, just get everyone to open up Add Nearby. In the list that comes up, just tap to add whoever you want.

Snapcodes, still the main way of adding friends on Snapchat, has also been improved. You can now add a selfie to the center of your Snapcode, making it easier for friends to recognize you when you add them on Snapchat.

Also, you can now add Snapcode using screenshots. Just take a screenshot of the Snapcode and use the Add Friends feature to do handle the rest.

Earlier this month, Snapchat rolled out two-factor authentication to beef up security. Two-factor authentication requires you to use more than one form of verification to access an account. Typically, this information includes “knowing something” such as a password and “having something” such as a mobile device. If you haven’t already, you’ll want to reduce the chances your Snapchat account will get compromised.
