Synaptics is announcing today its first self-enclosed fingerprint authentication technology for laptops and other devices. The device could help enable growth in mobile transactions by making them more secure.
The technology is dubbed a “match-in-sensor” fingerprint authenticator. It can sense a fingerprint that a user is holding over a scanning surface, and then match the print to a database that is stored in the device itself.
San Jose, Calif.-based Synaptics said the sensor is “off the grid,” meaning all of the electronics are isolated from the rest of the system and are self-contained when it comes to identifying a fingerprint. This provides protection against on-device threats.
The device handles fingerprint image enrollment, pattern storage, and biometric matching within the fingerprint sensor in order to maximize security. It includes a chip with input-output functions, an in-sensor microprocessor, and firmware that executes on the device.
Other devices aren’t as secure because fingerprint data can be intercepted and forged by malware in a system. But users are starting to enjoy the freedom of password-free logins using fingerprint identification on some laptops. Users can also start buying things with laptops or other mobile devices using fingerprint identification.
“The entire mobile payments ecosystem, driven by rapid adoption of fingerprint authentication technology, is increasingly concerned about reducing security risks and eliminating threats of attack,” said Ritu Favre, senior vice president and general manager in the biometric products division at Synaptics, in a statement.
The device is available in sample quantities from manufacturers today.
