Having just released a 50th anniversary greatest hits album that looks back at their amazing career, English rock band The Who are now looking toward the future.
The band is planning to release an app for the Oculus Rift sometime in 2015, according to The Guardian. The band is collaborating on the app with their management company Trinifold Management, label Universal Music, and developer Immersive.
“We’ve kept it quite tight around The Who Hits 50 album, but the idea is to expand and use the technology to unlock different experiences as the tour evolves,” Michael Fenna, creative and production director at Immersive, told the Guardian.
Immersive also just built free smartphone and tablet apps for the band that were released recently. The apps show a 3D world full of photographs and videos spanning The Who’s many decades. Immersive said the Oculus app will include all that and even more concert footage.
A version of the Oculus app is scheduled to be unveiled on Wednesday in London, but the Guardian got an early look. In its review, the Guardian says:
“You strap on the Oculus Rift headset and a pair of headphones, then find yourself flying through a world based on familiar The Who images, from bullseyes and magic buses to a Soho doorway. Lyrics from the songs flash up as you swoop through the environment, and at one point virtual instruments — bass, drums, guitar, and keyboard — hover in the air ahead of you, with each turned up in the audio mix if you turn your head to look at it.”
