For New Relic’s Bill Lapcevic, Apple’s App Store and Google Play are a huge field of potential disappointment.

“I think that apps on the App Store and Google Play are starting to meet the expectations of end users, but there’s a long way to go,” says Lapcevic, who is VP of business development for New Relic.

For instance, only about 40 percent of the listed apps actually get used. And of those that are used, many are plagued by problems, slowdowns, or inconsistent performance.

“When the application doesn’t work properly, or when it returns bad results, or when it’s extremely slow, you get very frustrated. In the world of mobile apps, it’s very easy to switch from application to application,” Lapcevic says.

Customers have very little reason not to switch — or abandon your app entirely — if it’s not working the way they expect it to.

Additionally, the developers have no idea how the apps are performing, what customers are doing with them, or really anything except the occasional crash report.

Enter New Relic. “Our mission in life is to help the modern application developer understand how their application is servicing their customer, so the customer has an excellent experience,” Lapcevic says.

New Relic can help with three common problem areas:

  • network performance, which can drag down your app’s performance;
  • API calls to things like Facebook, Google, or e-commerce systems;and
  • back-end systems on the developer’s servers.

Since launching the New Relic platform, the company has had great results, Lapcevic says, with many developers adopting it and creating plugins that other developers can download from New Relic’s store. Database plugins have proven especially popular, given how critical database performance can be to app developers.
