VideoLAN today released VLC for Android 2.0, the first major upgrade to the popular video player in six months. The release brings a number of new features and enhancements, and is available to download immediately from the Play Store. Along with Android N-compliant permissions, this latest version brings the following additions:

  • Network browsing — the ability to play files stored locally on network servers, and supporting DLNA/UPnP, FTP, SFTP, NFS, and Windows Shares protocols


  • Direct subtitles download — lets you download subtitle files directly from the app, using


  • Video playlists


  • Pop-out window — allows the video to play in a smaller window while using other apps; also supports Samsung MultiWindow and LG Dual Window


  • History browser
  • Advanced options


  • Improved Android TV interface — can now also be utilized on mobile devices

Despite its polished appearance and full feature set, VLC for Android — like on other platforms — remains completely free.
