Symantec has put together perhaps the dorkiest security advice: an entire comic strip on how Shadow IT affects a business. And it reads like an ’80s after-school special.
We kind of love it.
Shadow IT encompasses the unseen and uncontrolled areas within a company’s IT system. If an employee uses an unapproved application to transfer or store company documents, the IT department won’t be able to see where that document goes. Another example is if an employee e-mail company information to a personal e-mail to work on projects at home on an unregulated computer.
These scenarios present issues in protecting proprietary information and can create holes through which hackers can slip into the system.
