Apple today announced that the official iPad launch is scheduled for April 3 in the U.S. The “Wi-Fi” model will be the first available and then followed by the “Wi-Fi + 3G” model in late April of this year.

Starting March 12, consumers will be able to pre-order both Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + 3G models from Apple’s online store or reserve a Wi-Fi model to pick up on Saturday, April 3, at an Apple retail store, according to the company’s announcement. The Wi-Fi model will cost $499 for 16GB, and $699 for 64GB. The Wi-Fi + 3G model will cost $629 for 16GB, and $829 for 64GB.

Originally, Apple had said the iPad would launch in late March, and as recently as last week, an Apple spokesman was still giving us “late March” as the launch date. However, the April 3 announcement isn’t a complete surprise. We recently covered Canadian analyst Peter Misek’s claim that inside sources had acknowledged that Apple may have been having manufacturing problems– limiting the number of iPad’s available and thus pushing to an April launch.

Apple also announced that the iPad will be available in various international countries in late April, including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK.
