In its 2014 fourth quarter earnings announcement today, Facebook revealed that it now has 1.39 billion monthly active users (up 13 percent year over year), and 1.19 billion mobile monthly users (up 26 percent year over year).
Facebook also shared that it now has 890 million daily active users (an 18 percent bump year-over-year) and 745 million mobile daily active users (a 34 percent increase year-over-year).
Just like its previous quarter, Facebook is now breaking out its mobile-only numbers in its more detailed earnings slides. Since the third quarter of 2014, Facebook has added 70 million mobile-only monthly active users, for a current total of 526 million — that’s right, more than half a billion Facebook users are just on mobile. They now account for 37.8 percent of its monthly active users:
With this quarter’s mobile advertising revenue hitting $2.47 billion (69 percent of total ad revenue), the growth of both of these mobile metrics is as important as ever. As Facebook continues to shift more of its focus to mobile, it will need to sustain these numbers — and this growth.
It’s important to note how Facebook defines mobile-only monthly active users (“users who accessed Facebook solely through mobile apps or mobile versions of our website, or used our Messenger app, in the last 30 days of the given quarter”) and that they do not include those on Instagram or WhatsApp.
Additionally, with the forced breakup of Facebook Messenger from the flagship app (last summer, Facebook forced all mobile users to download Messenger in order to use private messages), it will be important to watch how Facebook monetizes that section of its mobile audience. During the third-quarter 2014 earnings call, chief executive Mark Zuckerberg announced that payments will be coming to Messenger.
