Facebook is testing new email notifications that summarize all profile activity, reports Inside Facebook.
The company will begin testing the new summary email on users who currently generate a large number of notification emails. Those in the test will also have their email notification account settings automatically changed to toggle off all alert options except for the summary email.
While the change in email notification settings is no doubt aimed at reducing inbox clutter for the service’s most active users, the involuntary change is just as likely to annoy or anger those who experience it.
Facebook’s move toward condensed email notifications is likely a way for the company to boost click-through behavior to its site. Right now, Facebook defaults to sending users individual email notifications for over 70 different actions on the site — something users who are admins of active Pages easily attain. Generating email notifications in high volume can cause those users to ignore the bulk of them.
