Today SocialRank, a startup that helps brands and social media addicts find their most valuable Twitter followers, expanded its service to Instagram.

For the average user, SocialRank’s new tool is a fun, somewhat revealing way to learn more about your Instagram followers. While testing the service, I discovered my most popular followers (including a few brands and a few unexpectedly popular friends) and my most engaged followers (my mom and my sister, it turns out!).

Here’s what it looks like for me when I search for my most popular followers near New York with public accounts who posted recently:

For brands and social media celebs, SocialRank cofounder Alex Taub told us, this tool is about cutting through the weeds. It exists to help them connect with their biggest fans and segment them by popularity, location, recent activity, and hashtags.

“There are no good Instagram tools out there,” Taub told us last week. “What was missing is an easy-to-use and affordable audience management tool [that] pulls in all your followers into a central location.” This was SocialRank’s goal from the beginning: to help brands understand their social fans — and do stuff like arrange local events, orchestrate surprise-and-delight campaigns, research the competition, or even search for potential new hires.
