Palm’s new Pre device and its accompanying webOS platform have stirred up a lot of excitement in the mobile application development community. Unfortunately, only a select group of larger developers (Facebook, Pandora and TeleNav, to name a few) have been given access to the software development kit (SDK) so far.

For everyone else, Palm unveiled the first chapter of the book “Palm webOS: Developing Applications in JavaScript using Palm Mojo Framework,” written by its chief technology officer Mitch Allen, a couple of weeks ago. And yesterday, Allen teamed up with O’Reilly (which is also publishing the book), to do a webcast (or webinar as they call it) for developers who want to listen in. For those interested, I’ve embedded the hour-long webcast below — it’s a very interesting listen/watch for those who want to know how the platform will work.

Notably, Allen leads off the webcast by saying he will not be able to answer the “when, where or how much?” questions about the Pre. Those all remain up in the air. But the device is expected to be released sometime in the next few months, and rumors of the pricing have circulated as well.
