Is eBay pulling out of China?

If so, this would be a major defeat, and another sign of failure by Silicon Valley’s major companies there.

The Shanghai Daily is saying a sale of eBay’s China operations is imminent. Hani Durzy, spokesman for eBay, responded to our request for comment: “We don’t comment on rumors or speculation.” Earlier, we reported how Google is getting trounced by Chinese competitor, Baidu.

  • Assuming that story is true, this makes me wonder why eBay has so much trouble in major Asian markets? eBay is hardly a player in the Japanese online auction industry, where Yahoo Auctions claims a majority of the market share. And now Taobao is doing the same to eBay in the Chinese market...
  • This is a resurfacing of a rumour that appeared in March of this year. not sure why it wasnt picked up by american press at the time cause it was hyped to death by the chinese press in march.

    Shanghai Daily is running ''Report: Tom.com to buyout eBay China, PayPal'', quoting a "well informed source".

    Interesting that the eBay spokesperson did not outright deny the supposed sale of operations. It would be surprising to see this happen, in light of the significant and expanding market opportunity.
