Google continues its assault on Microsoft, offering StarOffice suite

googlepack-08-16.jpgGoogle quietly began including Sun’s StarOffice suite of word processing, spreadsheets and other workplace-oriented applications for free as part of its Google Pack offering.

Google and Sun Microsystems announced a vague partnership on StarOffice last year, but it wasn’t clear whether Google would really start supporting Sun’s software. It’s the latest move in Google’s steady effort to undermine Microsoft’s dominance of office software.

Google Pack, which users download, already includes Firefox, and media player RealPlayer, both competitors to Microsoft’s products.

Man I hope Google's participation improves that starOffice suite. It's really, really weak compared to MSOffice.

There are bugs of the style that MS cleaned out literally 12 years ago from MSOffice. All the code comments are in German (!). Help is worthless.

But hey, it's not microsoft. It's got that going for it.
