CleanFish raises $4.2M for sustainable seafood
To cope with dwindling stocks of wild fish, aquaculture — essentially, farming in water — has become more popular in recent years. But fish farms have their own problems, causing pollution that also affects the quality and safety of the meat.
CleanFish exists to connect consumers and commercial buyers with safe, sustainable fisherman, with a focus on environmental stewardship. The company provides a brand for fisheries to operate under and acts as a distributor.
Although the seafood provided by CleanFish will, of course, be more expensive, all it needs to be successful is a small niche: According to the release, the seafood industry in the US is worth $65 billion a year.
The $4.2 million funding was provided by TBL Capital. CleanFish is based in Sausalito, CA.
