TheFunded has published a list of the top rated venture capitalists, according to voting from the site’s membership.
To qualify for the list, a VC must have received at least five favorable reviews at TheFunded. Qualifiying VCs also can not have more than 20 percent of their ratings be unfavorable. Finally, they must have received an average review rating of at least a four points out of a possible five.
TheFunded has also taken measures recently to reduce the amount of gaming that happens on the site, disqualifying reviews for VCs that have asked entrepreneurs to rate them, for example — though its not clear yet how effective those measures have been.
Check out the names on the list. Some are expected, others are surprising. There are VCs from RRE Ventures, which is a highly rated firm generally on TheFunded, and so that is to be expected. But there are also lower level professionals, who haven’t even graduated to full partner within their firms, such as associate Lars Leckie, of Hummer Winblad. There are partners from firms that aren’t necessarily rated highly, such as Nate Redmond, of Rustic Canyon.
Why isn’t John Doerr, the respected venture capitalist with Kleiner Perkins, on the list? Doerr only has three reviews on the site so far, so hasn’t gotten the minimum of five to qualify.
This “top-rated” list is highly subjective. TheFunded has drawn many members dissatisfied with the venture capital funding process, and who have an ax to grind — and so many members tend to be critical in their reviews. Still, since the top-rated VCs need a ratio of at least five favorable reviews to every negative one, the list consists of those who have managed not to piss off too many entrepreneurs. In other words, they may not be the best VCs in terms of profits they’ve returned. But they’re at least pleasant enough to get along with. “They’re not total schmucks,” says TheFunded founder Adeo Ressi of the list. “It’s the highest possible standard you can set…I’m pleasantly surprised that so many venture capitalists made the list, given how high the standards are.”
The list will be updated weekly. Ressi expects many of the names to change over time.
Note: Rob Theis last week moved to Scale Venture Partners, from Doll Capital Management. We’ve brought that to Ressi’s attention, and he tells me Theis’ affiliation will be updated shortly.
