Intel confirms management shake-up as EMC hires away executive

Intel confirmed today it has changed its executive line-up amid two executive departures and reorganized its business around three top executives in the biggest shake-up since 2005.

Under the changes, Intel chief executive Paul Otellini will spend more time on corporate strategy and growth initiatives while the three executives under him will operate more of the world’s biggest chip maker’s business. The company confirmed that Pat Gelsinger has resigned to take a job elsewhere. EMC confirmed that it hired the 48-year-old Gelsinger, a 30-year Intel veteran, as head of its storage business. Intel’s top lawyer, Bruce Sewell, has also decided to leave the company; that’s significant since Intel faces considerable antitrust scrutiny now.

At Santa Clara, Calif.-based Intel, all major product divisions will report to the newly formed Intel Architecture Group, which will be co-managed by executive vice presidents Sean Malone and Dadi Perlmutter. Maloney will run business and operations and Perlmutter will lead product development and chip architecture (the design of Intel’s flagship chips).

They will be in charge of Intel’s components businesses and the development and marketing teams that are needed to get the products to market. One set of executives — Steve Palowski, Sunil Shenoy, Rony Friedman, Rob Crooke, and Raviv Melamed — will run design of micro-architecture, microprocessor and chipset development, system-on-a-chip solutions, and wireless chips.

Separately, six different market-focused businesses will operate under the new Intel Architecture Group umbrella. The PC Client Group is headed by Mooly Eden; the Data Center Group is run by Kirk Skaugen; the Visual Computing Group (a new group that underscores the importance of graphics chips to Intel’s future) is headed by Jim Johnson; the Ultra Mobility Group is headed by Anand Chandrasekher; the Embedded and Communications Group is headed by Doug Davis; and the Digital Home Group is run by Eric Kim.

The company’s global manufacturing organization will now report to Andy Bryant, chief administrative officer and an executive vice president. The manufacturing group is headed by Bob Baker, Bill Holt and Krzanich and is otherwise unchanged. Baker oversees Intel’s NAND flash memory chip business.

With Maloney moving up in the organization, Tom Kilroy will assume responsibility for sales and marketing and report directly to Otellini. Suzan Miller, deputy general counsel, will now take Sewell’s job as general counsel.
