McGraw-Hill axed from iPad launch after CEO leaks on TV

appletabletb431Updated with statement from McGraw-Hill.

This is one of Steve Jobs’ slides from this morning’s iPad launch presentation. Can you tell what’s wrong with it?

The awkward array of five logos used to be a tidy lineup of six. The day before the show, Apple removed McGraw-Hill, the 122-year-old publisher whose 61-year-old leader, Harold McGraw III — better known as Terry — prattled like a teenage schoolgirl about the tablet’s iPhone operating system on CNBC:

Yes, they’ll make their announcement tomorrow on this one. We have worked with Apple for quite a while. And the Tablet is going to be based on the iPhone operating system and so it will be transferable. So what you are going to be able to do now is we have a consortium of e-books. And we have 95% of all our materials that are in e-book format on that one. So now with the tablet you’re going to open up the higher education market, the professional market. The tablet is going to be just really terrific.

Picture-20McGraw-Hill is bigger than most of the publishers on this slide. But insiders say as soon as Terry shot his mouth off on CNBC, Jobs had the company cut from the presentation. We won’t know for a few weeks if McGraw was only wrist-slapped, or if he’s been thrown out of the game.

Either way, it’s a concrete lesson in just how far removed the publishing industry can be from reality. In the past, music and movie fatcats were able to figure out the unwritten rule that McGraw so glibly overlooked: If you’re working with Apple, shut up about it until Steve has left the stage.

Update: McGraw-Hill VP of corporate communications Steven Weiss sent the following statement after a phone discussion on Thursday:

“As a company deeply involved in the digitization of education and business information, we were as interested as anyone in the launch of the new device, although we were never part of the launch event and never in a position to confirm details about the device ahead of time. On Tuesday afternoon Mr. McGraw appeared on CNBC in a wide ranging interview to discuss our earnings announcement and growth projections for 2010. His speculative comments about Apple’s pending launch, which he shared earlier in the day in a call with investors, were simply intended to suggest that if the new device were to use iPhone applications, many of our education products would be compatible with the technology and could be made easily available on it.

“Unfortunately, it seems that many mistakenly interpreted his comments as being more specific to yesterday’s announcement.”

“It is also important to note that only the products of trade publishers were featured in the launch event. Our digital education programs are not in that category and were never part of those negotiations.”

We have spent quite a few hours getting to know Version 1.0 of the Apple iPad. One thing is for certain, this device is a game-changer for ePublishers.

    Good day,
I'm in love with my Nexus One - superphone ( just updated yesterday -OTA- its so much better now about the 3G signal & more faster charging time ) - we still have the 2g iphone & 3gs but were using it as MP3 player in our cars - 09 RIDGELINE & 09 PILOT -
I called my friend who's working on HTC in Houston - (he's senior engineer-the best guy to ask about software & phones) ( USA-HTC repair center is in Houston,Texas ) he divulge something to me.
We moved from California for GOOD - he worked with APPLE before & myself with Honda R&D and now we are in Texas ( hes in Houston, I'm in the best city in the USA - AUSTIN,TEXAS).
Here's the big scoop guys, GOOGLE wants some share on HTC board & they will invest in the company for more products to be made by HTC for them, like the ultra advance tablet & more advance phones that is way better than the so called OLD TECHNOLOGY iPAD& iPHONE, who are just good in aesthetic appearance with APPLE logo on it ( i'll bet all my money that whatever piece of crap they will make, people will buy it because of the name APPLE ) BUT if it is EMACHINES that even can do anything & will make your life easy and happy, still people will not buy it because its EMACHINE, people did you get it??? wake up!!!
    Thats all for now...
    Take care buddies & gurlies...
    God bless y'all
  • KLR
You sir, are an idiot… I'll wake up when you PULL YOUR HEAD OUTTA YOUR CHEAP 2ND RATE TECHNOLOGY USING ASS!!!

That's all from me, have a great day :)

Throwing Mcgraw Hill out isn't going to harm them, but Apple. They have a huge chunk of the educational market, and to remove them would hinder adoption of the iPad altogether.
  • Joseph Murciano
Well I say don't buy the iPad yet. It feels like the same hype over the 1st gen iPhones that used Edge and we all know what came out after less than a year, the 3G and then the 3GS. Wait till the OS supports multi-tasking and they add a camera to the iPad. Apparently the A4 chip is multi-core and will power the new iPhones when they come out later this year. I'm guessing that's when they'll upgrade the OS for multi-tasking. I've heard the new iPhones will have better cameras as well. Just for the fact it doesn't multi-task I'll wait on the iPad and save my money for a Mac Pro.

As for the Apple haters it's the same crap over and over we keep hearing from you. Dang, give it a rest already! Yes we know you hate Apple, but who cares? If you don't use the comparison of Windows owning the market then you talk about Blackberries or Nokia vs. the iPhone or you talk about Linux and how manly you are for using it on a homemade PC or now the darling of Apple haters... Android. Personally I use a PPC Mac with Leopard, but I also have Yellow Dog Linux on one of the partitions. I'm due for a new phone so I'll check Android phones as well as the iPhone and base my decision with which suits me better.
  • Thomas
In job's speech he did say that the iBook application will be a fundamental program for books and even in time, students will be using it for textbooks. I think there is some subtext here, since mcgraw-hill is a publisher for a lot of textbooks, I think that the publisher will be brought back into the ring after they get fined for breaking their NDA with Apple.
  • Bob Forsberg
I watched the live interview with McGraw and winced when he started blabbering info he had been privy to. Even the anchorette was surprised by the extent of information revealed by McGraw and knew he would be b*tch slapped by Steve for those comments.
  • photoboy2012
Agreed, i cringed and it was completely idiotic on his part. This is only a slap on the wrist though. McGraw is not going to be out forever in the end.
  • alanfleming
I'd love to see a source for this. At the moment there's nothing here except Boutin asserting it as fact.
  • ppapageorgiou
I watched the clip the day before the Apple launch and could hardly believe what the guy was saying. Any mid-ranking manager breaking an NDA like this would be summarily fired, as Terry surely knows!
  • mark
Mike... the first amendment doesn't apply when you sign an NDA. Leaking information before the company announces a product can do serious harm. In this case no.. but Jobs has every right to be upset.

    Timjones....
Another little fact about blackberry sales vs. iphone. Blackberries are sold by all of the major carriers- the iphone is only sold by one and its getting closer to over taking bb every day. Imagine whats going to happen when Verizon gets it...

I actually own a blackberry and its ok..just ok. You don't like Apple products? Fine but the reasoning behind your argument is very flawed and rather desperate/angry sounding. And just so you know- intellectual dishonesty is an oxymoron.
  • Mike Strong
Last P-Graph: "Either way, it’s a concrete lesson in just how far removed the publishing industry can be from reality. In the past, music and movie fatcats were able to figure out the unwritten rule that McGraw so glibly overlooked: If you’re working with Apple, shut up about it until Steve has left the stage."

Really! The publishing industry is wrong? How about Steve iJobs? Why should the tantrums and vicious behaviour by this overglamorized shovel promoter be allowed to set the tone for reasonable discourse. Sure, the McGraw Hill guy probably should have kept to himself but he didn't exactly commit murder. Couldn't Jobs have been even a tad decent? What the H is wrong with everyone for thinking the Jobs' behavior is admirable?

Anyone who believes in the first amendment or in freedom of the press at all should take their business away from Steve Jobs completely until he agrees to live with other people on the planet. And the "press" certainly shouldn't worship at the cathedral of Jobs' abusiveness. What a total jerk the guy is. This is hardly his first hissy-fit tantrum.

And for the apple core to worship this guy or not call him out on his dictatorial bent is just wrong. Jobs has always appealed on the basis of the emperor's clothing - i.e. "if you don't run a Mac you are not worthy to ...." As far as I am concerned, anybody (i.e. Jobs) who treats me like that doesn't deserve me but you folks all seem to drink it in.
  • i think you are completely correct - except for one thing, you are talking about steve jobs. his approach is indisputably successful . the trains are running on time, that's just reality.
  • FEARITSELF
For McGraw Hill, a device like this is key. In educational publishing you basically cut out all the sciences if you can not deliver color. Likewise the ability to deliver a (excuse the dated term) multimedia experience really can move educational publishing fwd. (you try and summarize the Heisenberg uncertainty principle in 4 paragraphs) If this device were to become as ubiquitous as the ipod it could potentially blunt the used book market, bringing the cost of course materials WAY down. This gaffe is certainly injurious to MH educational publishing in the short term. I'm sure the opportunity for a halo effect stock bump went by the wayside as well.
  • ras
I don't see how removing the company's name and logo hurts anyone. When you're doing business with a company like McGraw-Hill, why would you care if their name is on a marketing slide put out by Apple? We use McGraw-Hill products and our company doesn't care in the slightest.

Mistake, yes. Any real significance? No.
  • arnoldofgreeley
Paul Boutin writes, "...Harold McGraw III — better known as Terry — prattled like a teenage schoolgirl about the tablet’s...."
Do people like you still write, "...prattled like a teenage schoolgirl..."? I thought that we had moved beyond this style of writing 30 years ago.
Try to add some sophistication to your writing so that racist and sexist, in this case, thoughts are no longer used.
  • Heckler
Are you sure you didn't mean "Socialistic thought" instead of sophistication in your (hopefully) last sentence? Schoolgirls still prattle, last time I checked.

    You sound so gray
  • arnoldofgreeley
    Heckler,
    Wow, what a sophisticated reply.
  • Steve Jobs should set the bears on him...
  • smithmaria61
McGraw Hill Chairman and CEO Terry McGraw told CNBC that Apple would be announcing an iPhone OS-based tablet during Wednesday's media event. He also said his company would have text books on the device, and that McGraw Hill had been working with Apple for some time on the project.
  • iPad is really an awesome product of Apple after iPhone. Many people get surprise by its functioning. I personaly like it, will surely gonna my hands on it
  • this stupid CEO should fire himself.. big mouth..
  • jd
Apple had to punish McGraw Hill for that gaffe. How else to keep people's lips sealed?
  • Loose lips sink big ships. In this case, his own ship.

    http://bit.ly/bIBP1o
  • Tim
Then McGraw-Hill just dodged being associated with this Apple iFail trinket. McGraw-Hill should not make its content available on Apple products, it should only make it available on Kindle, Nook, the bazillion Android devices, etc.
  • haligator9000
Just like all their other iFail products. You know like the iPod & iPhone. Umm, they just revolutionized the music business while making BUTTLOADS of cash. You must be talking about those you iGenius.
  • Tim
You forgot the iNewton. That was maybe before or after Microsoft had to give Apple some money so Apple could survive. How about iTV, iMacbookAir. By the way, with all of Apple hype, RIM Blackberry sold 10 million phones the last quarter vs 8 million iPhones. And Windows is in like on 90% of computers out there, vs 10% for Mac. And Apple keeps blabbering about texbooks on the iTampon. Well, McGraw-Hill’s marketshare in textbook publishing of is like 35%. Nice going, cult leader.
  • iCult Leader
The Newton was before the Microsoft $150 Million investment. You're right, Blackberry sells more phones, they also have more models on more Cellular networks worldwide. They both are not as big as Nokia. Windows 90% on worldwide computers yes but Apples small 10% profits them alot more $$$. Look at the larger PC Manufacturers, do they earn more than Apple because they sell more PC's? NBC left the iTunes store (one of the largest iTunes sellers) and they came back. Apple may not need McGraw-Hill, the iPad is not an e-book reader, its only one of its functions. Who knows maybe one of McGraw-Hill's competitors can become much more dominant without McGraw-Hill in the running. Apple's App store has made many a Millionaire that didn't dream of it before. But I guess you know better, that is why your product earns how much??? I bet you are creating something revolutionary that will show the world what a piece of crap Apple's "iTampon" is. iTampon? How old are you?
  • Mike
Tim, actually your comparison about rim and apple is flawed. All US providers were offering 2 for 1 or half price blackberries. Plus there is a CDMA version of the blackberry. To only sell 2m more than apple is actually quite sad.
  • Tim
ok all you Apple fanbois, All that hype Apple built up for this overpriced iFail trinket, wow. You would think that all the hype around the iPhone, everyone is crazy about it, but in reality more people got Blackberry. As for all that cash Apple's making, way to go buying overpriced, overhyped trinkets, keep drinking the kool-aid and keep Steve Jobs laughing all the way to the bank, suckers. Pointing out the Apple hype and fanbois get all prissy. Axing McGraw-Hill from this event is classic example of Apple arrogance. For most people's uses of computers, they don't need overpriced, overhyped, so most people don't get Apple. Apple is all hype.
  • Jason
You seem to be really angry. Why is that?
  • cheesus_c
haha, k. keep using windoze - it's so much fun.
  • Tim
    netbook over an iTampon
  • cheesus_c
netbooks are a niche. A cheap one with linux may be worth it if you're desperate to type on those stupid assed keyboards. I'll take a 12" macbook - thanks.
  • OMFG! Most of the netbooks are 10" which you think is useless and you are going to buy a 12"
macbook which is just slightly bigger than a 10" one. Seriously you have lost your mind.
  • KLR
…go eat a cow and provide sub-par tech support for windblows loser.
  • Aw Loser Troll. First show your face instead of scratching the itch with desperation.
  • Really my problem with netbooks are the keyboards are too small(btw the Macbooks start at 13.3"). The iPad looks really stupid but Apple's Macbook line is pretty sweet.
  • Ah! Finally one sane reply with no fanboyism.

BTW netbooks are not meant for complex stuff, just a small portable laptop. It justifies their needs. If you want to run photoshop or play Quake, then they'll fail
  • Tim
funny about the niche thing, Macbooks are a pretty rare sight out here in the real world. Wal-Mart and Target sells netbooks but not Macs.
  • KLR
Walmart caters to hillbillys and welfare moms… Which one are you?
  • cheesus_c
haha. why would i give a shit what the wal-mart and target shoppers use. You and the "real world" can keep shopping at Wal-Mart buying useless netbooks running winblows.
  • Because that is mainstream. You need to look at it.... You looked frustrated... Relax. Have a beer.
  • Jaffers
Hey guys, don't feed the trolls.
  • haligator9000
First of all it was simply the Newton and it was a failure. So was the cube and others. And then Apple got an influx of cash and turned the company around and this is somehow a fault. And your point that because RIM sold more Blackberry's than Apple sold iPhone's that it's a failure? You should tell Apple so they can immediately drop the product and the HUGE amount of money it's making them. I guess none of their other successful products count in this versus Blackberry thing somehow to you. And NO other company has ever had failures. Like say Palm, which is doing so great right now. Or Windows Vista, a product so bad they had to keep selling XP to make any money on an operating system. As to Windows having 90% so what. Any computer company would kill to have Apple's 5% (Not 10%) share of the computer market. And their record breaking profits and $200+ dollar share price. Finally, so what cult are you? The I hate Apple for no reason other than they don't run windows on their machines. Why do they and we bother you so much. I'm not going to say you're jealous of our better OS. That's a no win and they both work. I like using OS X more than Windows, my choice. But I also have an XBOX and run Windows 7 on my Mac. I use what works. And I'm sorry the Zune sucks but at least you have the option of buying an iPod, which doesn't. So go fight with your Windows PC to keep it from crashing and from viruses. While I continue to be productive with fewer crashes and almost no virus problems in my Insanely Great 5% Mac.
  • csuwldcat
I agree with almost everything you said, but watch the share price argument, dollar price per share alone is meaningless, you have to add in relative dilution (how many shares are there total) and other factors like dividends and the like...for instance, Berkshire Hathaway is trading at $108,649 per share right now, and though profitable, I don't think that BRK.A is worth 543 times more than Apple stock ;)
  • hippie legend
They sell less phones than other companies but still manage to make a disproportionate share of profits. And that is what counts, after all.
  • CultFollower
The Newton was a product launched under a non-Steve Apple, and killed when Steve returned. But good point. When the iPad fails you can tell everyone you told them so.
  • arthurthegreat
Why don't the MacMorons go suck the iCock of Steve Blowjobs them? The iCock must be a revolutionary dildo. Personally I think the iPad will succed, but the iBooks will fail. The majority of publishers will not put their best-selling books, text books or technical books to be sold without any DRM in a open format...
  • Darko
Really? How long did it take for you to figure out to put the letter "i" before cock? Amazing. You truly are Arthur the Great.
  • RevDr
You are an idiot. Kill yourself.
  • Ben
Apple did the same thing a few years back. Jobs was due to introduce a new line of Powermac with the latest ATI Radeon chip. A day or two before his keynote ATI said something about the new chip being inside all the new Powermac Apple is about to introduce. Jobs lost his shit and have the whole introduction pulled, from the keynote and the show floor. Introduce the new machines a month or two later on the website with no fanfare.

Who thought it was not anything but a planned leak?
  • wow.
  • GetAClueCEO
Amazing. Anyone holding the CEO position knows perfectly well that they're under written NDA and that they shouldn't preannounce anything from another company--even if that company ISN'T Apple under Steve Jobs! Astonishing error of judgment by a CEO. His bad!
