Samsung’s multi-carrier stab with its high-end Galaxy S Android phones appears to be a smashing success. The carrier announced today that it has sold 1 million phones in the U.S. since they began shipping on July 15 on AT&T and T-Mobile.
Each of the Galaxy S phones goes by different names on their carriers. AT&T has the Samsung Captivate, and T-Mobile has the Vibrant. On August 31, the Epic 4G (the only 4G-equipped Galaxy S device) will land on Sprint, and later this year Verizon will receive the Fascinate, which will compete with its many other high-end Android offerings.
All of the phones share the same basic specifications — including a 1 gigahertz Hummingbird Samsung processor, 4″ Super AMOLED screen, 5 megapixel camera, and Android 2.1 with Samsung’s TouchWiz skin — but each has its own hardware and software customizations for its specific carrier. Sprint’s Epic 4G, for example, features a slide-out physical keyboard and a front-facing camera for video conferencing. The T-Mobile Vibrant and Verizon Fascinate appeared to be very similar, and the AT&T Captivate differs only with its boxier design.
Part of the success of these devices can likely be attributed to how cheaply they’re available on Amazon and other sites, as Fortune points out. The Captivate is now free on Amazon with a two-year contract, and the Vibrant is $49 with contract. Both carriers are still officially offering the phones for $200 with contract, but many smart shoppers are opting for the lower prices online.
The overall success of the devices tells us that Samsung definitely has a hit on its hands — even before Galaxy S phones land on Verizon and Sprint. I’d be particularly interested to see just how many Captivate phones it sold on AT&T, because customers who opted for that phone obviously didn’t want the iPhone 4 for some reason. Samsung’s success is also something Motorola needs to pay attention to, because now it’s no longer the only kid on the block with a popular series of Android phones.
