Apple loses game of chicken, allows Flash and other conversion tools for iOS apps

In a surprising move today, Apple announced it is relaxing App Store restrictions that were put in place earlier this year that effectively banned developers from using app conversion tools like Appcelerator’s Titanium, Unity 3D, and most importantly, Adobe’s Flash-to-iPhone compiler in Flash CS5.

Apple listed one caveat: The converted apps cannot download any code. “This should give developers the flexibility they want, while preserving the security we need,” Apple wrote.

Also, in a move towards being more transparent, the company will publish its App Store Review Guidelines so that developers know exactly how their apps are reviewed.

By relaxing its app development restrictions and publishing its review guidelines, Apple is responding to criticisms that have been lobbied against it for some time. The news also follows a reveal from earlier this month, when Wired.com sought a copy of Adobe’s complaint against Apple regarding the conversion tool ban. The Federal Trade Commission refused to hand over the documents — all but confirming that the FTC was actively investigating Apple.

Even without a potential FTC probe, Apple wouldn’t have been able to hold out on its conversion tool ban for long. Google’s Android platform is quickly gaining in popularity, and many developers would likely want to use conversion tools to bring their apps to Android, other mobile devices, and web app platforms. Apple may be the king of mobile apps right now, but that won’t last forever.

“Apple may be the king of mobile apps right now, but that won’t last forever.”Here's great insight.”You may be alive right now, but that wont last forever”"The world may exist right now, but that wont last forever”"The article may sound like its has deep insight, that wont last forever”Apple Looses, Effectively Banned, Is evil. There you go.Its amazing what gets published in the name of journalism – but then this IS the Internet!

“Apple Looses, Effectively Banned, Is evil. There you go.” What does that sentence even mean?

  • Klick8986

I believe he's trying to say that Apple should be banned because its evil… or something along those lines. Still I don't agree, many people believed that the PSP would overtake the DS because of better graphics and because of a higher quality machine, but the DS is still on top because it had already established itself long before a rival appeared. This may hold true with the iPhone and the Droid. Although if the problems continue to build for Apple as it has been recently, the Android may have the chance to overtake them and in the end completely take over the market. Still, I believe that Apple will still be able to maintain its role as the leader if they fix their current problems and if the rumors of the iPhone moving to Verizon flourish.

The story is classic….. all title with no substance. Great way tho to get hits for the site.A better guess why Apple might want to do this is that a cross platform solution is coming in January as it becomes clear what the North Carolina facility is truly about. To say that Apple loses a game of chicken is laughable, but it's all in the profitability/cash flow/ easy solution mode that powers the iOS agenda…. see the new A15 chip on the horizon… that certainly will in the fullness of time scare the crap out of Microsoft and and all the android fanboys… you have not seen anything yet.

  • ChampagneBob

What a waste of discussion…. good job of title though to get site hits. It's a laugh when you surmise that Apple loses a game of chicken… maybe a better guess is that come January iOS would be cross platform and this paves the way for the full implementation of the utility of the North Carolina facility…. I don't know any more than you about Apple's plans or reason(s) for doing anything, but my imagination is certainly better than yours when is comes to guessing!!!!

Bob, two posts, both of which are completely incoherent. Good job.The NC datacenter is most likely going to be used for its new streaming media offering via Apple TV and iTunes. But yes, clearly your imagination is better.

Picking and choosing from your own word – to show how anyone can twist a story around with sensational headlines.”Apple loses game of chicken ……”"….that effectively banned developers from using app conversion tools like….”Thus must be “evil”Do YOU see how easy it is to create sensational headlines .. note the irony and the sarcasm.

  • vinosp

Not really – I was pointing out how easy it is to create sensational headline like the author did. Where did Apple even get into a “game of chicken” – what does that even mean? Apple did not even give Flash a chance to run on the iOS and still does not. Game of chicken is between two on the same road – Apple and Adobe are on different highways altogether – both proprietary. There was no “effective” ban on any tools – Apple simply gave guidelines which developers could follow – or not.

  • vinosp

Why are you being so defensive? Commenters are pointing out your sensationalist headline which has nothing to do with the story you wrote. I am here only because you got hits on this page and went to the top of Google News. Nothing in your story provides any special insight into the news you reported – which is available on many other sites with less sensationalism. You got the hits you wanted. I believe the commenters are just pointing that out.

Not being defensive. It's two commenters (including you) who seem to take offense, and leave typical internet fanboy comments complaining. If you want to be taken seriously, try forming full sentences, avoid the hyperbole, and watch out for typos.

If Apple can partner with Adobe and offered Adobe products on Apple device, i think the apple world will be better and better . do you think so ??? haha….but i am sure that the flash must affect the speed of the system , which may be a unlucky thing for phone user . i also can use a Aneesoft video coverter converter flash to iphone . we can install the frash App on our iphone which is a nice flash app.

“Apple may be the king of mobile apps right now, but that won’t last forever.”You wanna bet? btw has anyone caught up with the craps of MS?

  • Klick8986

well I assume the fact that apple was trying to push its own software that develops apps instead of Flash would place it on the same”Highway” as you put it. By allowing flash to be used on it's apple products (iPhone, Itouch, etc) it can no longer control exactly what type of software is used for the apps in its store.Just saying.

  • Klick8986

As for the title I thought it was appropriate. Every business could be considered a game of chicken. Especially when dealing with another business that may harm your sales. Apple by allowing Flash to be used on its systems may be doing more good than harm. but only time will tell and we'll see the eventual outcome.

Clearly flash for iPhone is not as broken and buggy as they had initially stated months ago.
