Hewlett-Packard’s board is close to making a selection for a successor to Mark Hurd as chief executive. Bloomberg reported that a source said the company is close to picking an internal candidate.
The shortlist includes executives who run HP’s largest divisions now. Top candidates include Vyomesh Joshi, head of the printer business; Todd Bradley, head of the PC division; Dave Donatelli, who heads the storage and server business; Tom Hogan, executive vice president of enterprise sales and marketing; and Ann Livermore, head of the largest division, which includes enterprise services and hardware. In other words, that’s almost the entire internal executive team. Bloomberg said HP directors met this week to discuss the CEO search.
This search is critical for the future of HP, which has become the world’s largest technology company. The position is so powerful that it seems like the closest thing to royalty in the tech industry.
Hurd left HP on Aug. 6 after an investigation found he had violated HP’s code of conduct by failing to disclose a “close personal relationship” with former HP marketing contractor Jodie Fisher.
The announcement of his successor might happen in the next week, the source told Bloomberg. Spencer Stuart executive recruiting is doing the search. HP declined to comment to Bloomberg. Cathie Lesjak, HP’s chief financial officer, is interim CEO. She has said she doesn’t want the top job. Hurd has since joined Oracle. I for one am happy that HP is considering internal candidates closely. As I wrote earlier, it’s about time that someone who understands the company from the inside gets a chance to run it.
