Motorola’s Xoom tablet priced at $800 for Feb. 24 launch

Forget the previously rumored launch date and price for Motorola’s Xoom Android tablet. It now looks to be headed to Best Buy stores on February 24 for a hefty $799.99, Engadget reports.

Since the news comes from a Best Buy sales flyer, it’s more believable than any previous rumor. It’s also disappointing, since the $800 price tag makes the Xoom horribly uncompetitive with the iPad or Android tablets like the Samsung Galaxy Tab.

The Xoom was one of our favorite gadgets at the Consumer Electronics Show last month, but there’s little chance it will be able to take off now given the ludicrously high pricing. Additionally, Verizon is apparently forcing customers to buy data contracts when they pick up the tablet, which makes it even more expensive for those willing to pay the $800.

Part of the Xoom’s pricing problem stems from the fact that Motorola is only offering it with 32 gigabytes of storage and 3G capabilities (upgradable to 4G eventually). In comparison, Apple’s 32GB iPad with 3G costs $729 (without any contract required). The Xoom is technically more capable than the iPad — it sports cameras for taking photos and video conferencing, as well as a higher resolution screen — but most consumers will only see it as more expensive.

The Xoom will run Android 3.0, which means it will offer a spiffy new tablet interface and can also play some powerful 3D games.

Motorola would have been better off offering a WiFi-only unit with less storage, in addition to the flagship 32GB model, to achieve a lower price tag.

Earlier today during the Super Bowl, Motorola also unveiled its first major Xoom commercial, which takes some obvious swipes at Apple:

Until the Samsung Galaxy Tab runs Android Honeycomb – it's not a tablet.

Hey now, my Galaxy Tab runs just fine. Though I am pretty psyched about Honeycomb :) .Also, holy wow at that price point.

So, the point of this article is that the author believes it's over-priced. That's a marketing issue, not an IT one. It's $800 vs $729 and that's “ludicrously high” ? Let the companies price their own products without these pointless comments because that's what they are doing anyways.

  • mrbofus

It is high if there is no other option within that product line, and it has to compete with a product that has products in a lower price range.

Wow. I thought I might pick one up if it was $499 – (MIGHT!) Looks like I'll be getting an iPad2 instead.

Let's not forget that 800$ is subsidized by Verizon. Add that and the machine is incredibly expensive. I think in Motorola they are dreaming if they think they will be able to compete with apple and all the other android tablet coming on the market.

Yah because device price has nothing to do with IT? That makes no sense.

  • http://www.devindra.org Devindra Hardawar

It's unclear if the machine is actually subsidized by Verizon. If it were, I'd expect it to be cheaper.

From the IT perspective, of course price matters. The lower the better. I understand if from that perspective it's not attractive. However, you blend that in with 'their' marketing perspective. Perhaps they aren't going for big-time volume on the device, and have determined that at this price they get the right kind of customer at the price they want. Who knows? They might already be selling this thing at a loss and this was as low as they wanted to go. Let me retract calling your comments 'pointless.' It was 3am and I had a serious superbowl hangover starting already. So on that point I'm wrong.

You could nearly buy 2 iPads!

Good, hopefully it's going to auto-correct your grammar like an iPad would. ;)

You would be making a very wise decision to go with an iPad2.

Alexandre, its always easy to criticize someone than appreciating. You should probably think about your perspectives and objectives instead of talking about others.Hope you learn…
