Apple's new high-speed interface may be called Thunderbolt

Apple is expected to show off new Macbook Pro laptops on Thursday, and among their new features is a high-speed interface using Intel’s Light Peak technology. But it seems Apple won’t stick with the technical-sounding Light Peak name — instead, its new ports will be called Thunderbolt, Engadget reports.

The site points to some leaked specification lists and screenshots that list the Thunderbolt port. Instead of finding space for an entirely new port location on the Macbook Pros, it appears that the Thunderbolt port will replace the Mini DisplayPort connection on the laptops. That means the Thunderbolt connection will support high-speed data connections, as well as the ability to connect additional monitors to the Macbook Pro.

As VentureBeat’s Dean Takahashi explains it, Intel originally proposed Light Peak as a fiber-optic connection to replace all of the cables that connect something to a computer. But initially, the usage for Light Peak looks more limited, and it will use copper wires instead of fiber-optic connections. The speed is faster than universal serial bus (USB) 3.0, carrying data at 10 gigabits a second in both directions at the same time. Sony is also expected to use Light Peak.

Given its speed and bandwidth capabilities, Light Peak was meant to serve as a single interface to juggle multiple functions. The protocol is smart enough to know what you’re intending to use it for — for example, it will function as a disk interface if you plug in a Light Peak-capable disk drive into your computer, but if you plug in a Light Peak monitor, it will instead function as a display interface.

This is good to see. Great to see something new in the world of tablets. For one month, I just saw all tablet reviews and releases. But still amazed by this. Thanks for the information.

Very cool. I wonder if there will be a Thunderbolt Hub?

It's going to be called an HTC 4G phone on the VZW network? Wow, that's magical!

Hi There, Well it is to be expected that Apple will keep the pace for communication technology. They seem to be popping out good ideas left and right so hopefully the rest of the companies can keep up, at least for the sake of competition. It would be great if Android tried for Laptops. They have been able to match the IPhone, the tablets are speeding up and catching up to IPad, the laptop seems like the next move,,,,or perhaps the laptop is outdated? Technology is not only about keeping up with the competition but about being able to predict the next best thing. With how advanced the tablets are being made does it make sense to keep up producing a technology that soon may no longer have a spot? The Apple Laptops have a special place in our hearts, they breed commitment to their sleek design and ability to be virus proof. Will the lightning speed, be enough to keep the laptop in the game? Well, it will at least till flash and usb connection comes to Ipad.

New and faster ways of data transfer are always welcome. But think about this – what if I want to connect my external Thunderbolt drive and continue using my external monitor at the same time? How are you supposed to do that, when they removed miniDisplayPort and all you have is now this new one? With this push of 1 port for all, Apple again proved that it doesn't listen to what customers really need, and instead pushing it's own views.

That could present an issue…unless the monitor includes one or two Thunderbolt ports on it.
