Hackers target Sony sites and its top executives

The hacking group Anonymous has targeted Sony web sites to take revenge against the company for suing hacker GeoHot. But an offshoot of the group has also begun targeting Sony executives by digging up and exposing their private information.

Under what it calls Operation Payback, the hacker collective launched distributed denial of service attacks (which flood sites with traffic in order to bring them down) against PlayStation.com, the PlayStation Store, and the PlayStation Network. The group called the attack #OpSony. But the attacks against executives will likely cause more law enforcement concerns and raise the intensity of the conflict.

The more aggressive offshoot group, called SonyRecon, has used the OpSony communications channel to announce itself and target Sony executives. The group is collecting personal information dubbed “dox,” which includes names, phone numbers, pictures, home addresses, email, internet protocol address, family members and other data. The group is seeking info on Sony chief executive Howard Stringer and others.

Some of the attacks planned against the individuals include pranks sending them post cards saying one of their previous sexual partners has a sexually transmitted disease. But it clearly seems pretty scary for anyone targeted. The group has reportedly shared the details of Sony employees’ family records and personal details.

Sony is suing George “GeoHot” Hotz under copyright law for sharing “jailbreaking” tools that allow users to circumvent the security of the PlayStation 3 and run unauthorized software on it.

Anonymous said that Sony had abused the judicial system to censor information on how its products work, victimized customers for possessing and sharing information, and targeting every person who seeks that information. “In doing so, you have violated the privacy of thousands,” a reference to Sony’s attempt to find out who downloaded the jailbreaking software. Anonymous further accused Sony of “corporate greed” and seeking to control users. “Now you will experience the wrath of Anonymous. You saw a hornet’s nest and stuck your penises in it.” It went on to warn, “Expect us.”

Since sony are trying to make an example out of GeoHot, it's only fair that they're made an example of too.

so at what point does something i buy become mine to fiddle with?

  • FU11

ummm fuck you all. If you are using the information to steal and pirate intellectual property they they have every right to prohibit the sharing of that information, and sue you. At the end of the day this theft results in loss of revenue= LOSS OF SOMEONE'S JOB. This hacker needs to get a life because they have WAYYYY to much time on their hands. I want to go to the hackers house an just take all his computers, and tell them that they are being greedy since they want to protect and keep their property.

FU11 you are a dumbass…. I Geohotz did not hack the ps3 for piracy, he hacked it to give the otheros function back…. Which is the reason i specifically went and paid $600 for my (notice i said MY as in I paid for it and bought it) first ps3, when sony anounced the slim version would have this and other functions taken away. Sony used the otheros function to evade import taxes by claiming it as a computer. Then took the function awaw.”I want to go to the hackers house an just take all his computers, and tell them that they are being greedy since they want to protect and keep their property. “Did you not understand He bought his PS3 therefore it is his property not sony's.

You are a moron. You may have purchase the system, but you do NOT have the right to circumvent the security, or share “jailbreaking” tools. Because you own the device DOES NOT MEAN YOU OWN THE PATENT. Get a clue.

Let them do it, sony is also trying hard to prevent it!!..

No you're a dumbass. He agreed to the terms and agreement when turning the ps3 on.Also, homebrew has always lead to piracy. But I love free games though :(

just because a company puts somthing into a agreement doesnt mean its legal, companies do it all the time, you can sign an agreement to give me your first born, but it doesnt mean it will stand up in court.

Are we censoring comments much? posted yesterday and moderators never posted!

So what you are saying (about your example of the first born) that if we sign a agreement it wouldnt hold up in court, so those ppl that sign a agreement and gave birth to a baby that they agreed on giving to somebody but decided to keep it should just tell the judge to it wont hold up???? yeah that was a dumbass statement. you sign a agreement by clicking yes or no and if u hit no you wouldnt be able to do nothing. now from there you can go about ur business or sign the agreement. it's the same thing. here is another one just in case for slow winded ppl like your self. i'm pretty sure that those child pronophers have the same agreement so the ppl that are arrested for watching child pronorphogy should just say hey judge it was just a agreement it wont hold up???? yeah you are the dumbass couse one thing have nothing to do with the other. if sony took it out then so what either u sign to play online and have fun or you say forget it hit no and dont play at all. simple as that. he hacked in to the system to retrive some of the functions back come on here thats illegal oj simpson is sitting in jail cause somebody had his stuff he wanted back but he did it the wrong way now he is sitting in jail this dipshit hack in the system for ur explaination of bring some of the function back did it the wrong way now ppl cant get online as the result of it…. man you are a douche bag

  • mag12

dude, I like the passion, but you need spell-check.

  • sealteameight

bottom line is this its a felony to hack into some one computer or software, and because sony promised something and there taking it back or what ever the situation is,its still a crime to hack into some one system, and i dont know about you guys however iam sure sony has a hell of a legal team, i have a strong feeling some one is going to be doing some jail time.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_NYUQUIEF2AHVJPREONGNSHQWYU mark

A few years ago Sony hacked my computer and installed a secret root kit when I played a CD on my computer. They also decided to remove an advertised feature of my PS3. Now they call foul when someone allegedly does similar things to them.

Sony obviously did not do a good job implementing the necessary security measures in order to prevent jailbraking of their consoles. I do agree that if own something, paid for by my own money then I should have the right to smash it, throw it off the roof or jailbrake it. But on the other hand, the company does need the revenue in order to continue they business. It really comes down to a cat and mouse game, Sony has to do a better job with their security measures and it has to be VERY careful on how it handles users privacy. I mean really, they have ALL of the IP's of ALL of the users that visited the jailbraking site. That crazy, what are they going to do, sue everyone in question, for what? compensation? Now look what happen, the whole thing snow balled into a huge mess where now Sony will loose billions. I do not see any major problems with the Xbox 360 system, users do “jailbrake' their systems but what does Microsoft do? Ban them!! That simple.

These hackers are simply people with ” no life ” (so to speak) that feel if they target a major corporation, they'll finally get the attention they couldn't as a child. I mean, if you're truly that desperate, you might at well overdose with a bottle of scotch.
