Web 2.0: MC Hammer reveals deep search product WireDoo

Is there something wrong with search? There are many answers to that question, and rapper M.C. Hammer took the stage at the Web 2.0 Summit with his own, WiredDoo, a deep search solution. With the tagline, “Search once, see what’s related,” Hammer said that with any product there is always room for improvement, so there’s nothing wrong with today’s search.

As an example, Hammer walked through a slide deck with a real estate search for houses near Horace Mann School in New York.  Results in the SlideDoo search include houses for sale, as well as statistics about the school such as truancy rate, and other relevant information about the neighborhood.

While the interface was a bit rough, based on my observation, what’s under the hood opens some very fascinating possibilities. For those who are unfamiliar with MC Hammer’s role in Silicon Valley, he’s known as a very active figure, angel investor and promoter of young companies. During his presentation he said that the idea came together as the result of conversations he’s had with friends, and technologists capable of building upon the current search experience. And with Google co-founder Sergey Brin back stage, the Web 2.0 Expo wouldn’t be the place for Hammer to launch a product that was half-baked. There’s certainly more at play.

What was on view on stage was nascent, there are likely few people with the access to ideas and talent Hammer has. WireDoo will be worth keeping an eye on.
