New York City has made a strong play to be the next big tech hub, and Spotify is helping it along.
Spotify announced today that it will expand its New York City presence with a new Chelsea headquarters later this year, increasing the company’s engineering staff to roughly 200.
While Spotify didn’t specify the address of the new building, cheif content office Ken Parks did say that the company will take over the top floor of the “Bed Bath & Beyond building”, likely referring to 620 6th Ave (below).
City mayor Michael Bloomberg didn’t understate what the move means for New York City.
“New York City is the place where you have the talent — not just tech talent. This is the intellectual capital of the world,” Bloomberg said today at Spotify’s current New York City headquarters.
The move is a big one for Spotify, which expanded to New York City with 20 employees just three years ago. Since then, its New York workforce has expanded to roughly 150 employees split across engineering and other areas.
“Yes Spotify is hiring,” Spotify chief marketing officer Jeff Levick said.
