Foursquare wants to get hundreds of millions more people checking in via their feature phones.
The company today announced a new Foursquare app designed for Nokia’s überpopular Series 40 phones, including its upcoming Asha devices.
While Foursquare isn’t making the biggest deal of the news (the announcement is only 109 words long), the new app is proof that Foursquare knows that it needs to target the feature phone market if it wants to continue to grow.
Foursquare isn’t alone in this realization. Both Facebook and Twitter have also gone out of their way to create better mobile experiences for feature phones. Twitter, for example, announced last year that it had optimized its mobile site for those without smartphones. The company’s goal? “To make Twitter the most accessible way to connect with the world, even with the weakest signals and the simplest devices,” as Twitter VP of product Satya Patel put it last year.
Smartphones may get the most press, but feature phones still have the most users.
