Evernote has updated its Windows version with a Skitch-like image annotation tool.
With the tool, a user can mark up a photo or graphic right in notes. An Annotate button appears in the upper right when you mouse over an image. A click on the button brings up the tool, with options to insert arrows, stamps, text, and shapes, as well as simple cropping and resizing. Closing the window updates the image.
Evernote bought Skitch in mid-2011. At the time of the acquisition, Evernote promised that it would bring the Mac-based Skitch “to every desktop and mobile platform under the sun.” The company’s Andrew Sinkov posted about the thinking behind the purchase:
“For years, one of our most requested feature areas has been related to improved handling of images and annotation capabilities. Our users take and share millions of photos and screenshots already, but the experience isn’t as good as it could be. We debated about whether to add the improved functionality into Evernote or build a separate app to handle it. Finally, we decided to do both.”
Sync has also been boosted in the updated Windows version. “So fast,” the company said on its corporate blog, “that you won’t notice it at all.”
Last September, the notetaking and reminder tools company launched its Evernote 5 for Windows. The company added many of the features already existing in its Mac version and touted the new Windows version’s modern interface design, faster performance, improved search, reminders, shortcuts to notes and folders, and new views for looking at content.
Evernote is a notetaking, media-collecting, and reminder collaborative app that provides access to stored, synced items from any connected device. It is available in a free version with a paid premium offering that provides more storage and additional functionality.
The ever-growing Evernote, now becoming a popular business tool, has also come under some criticism recently for less-than-robust implementation. But CEO Phil Librin responded by promising to refocus on the product’s quality.
