GetYou — an app designed to help people see how well other people “get” them and in turn, see how well they “get” others — received $1.1 million in a seed round. The app stands to harness the power of first impressions in a potentially positive way.
Other apps like Tinder allow users to get a sense of what people make of them at first glance, too, but the feedback is often negative and troll-esque. Comments can be quite harsh. In case anyone’s keeping track, the company itself was recently under fire for sexual harassment allegations.
In any case, GetYou has turned the anonymous feedback model on its head by turning the process into a game. Once you download the iOS or Android app, you’re presented with a person’s photo. Then you’re asked a series of multiple choice questions about said person. Once you’re done, you get to see what the person’s real stats are from age to profession.
Over time, users can get a better sense of what kind of impression they make, which is potentially useful information to have when preparing yourself for a job interview, for instance. Or, you might simply make a new friend and have a good laugh at each other’s answers. The monetization model isn’t clear at this point but will likely take the dating app route once it ramps up to scale.
The seed round funds came from RDSeed, a venture capital firm, along with a couple of angel investors, including Avishai Abrahami, the founder of Wix.
