Amazon plans to hire 80,000 seasonal workers in the U.S. to make sure its warehouses can handle the annual surge in holiday orders.

The big number is a sign of the e-commerce giant's growing economic muscle as it continues to add more fulfillment and sortation centers across the country. The company has 50 fulfillment centers in the U.S. and another 15 sortation centers.

The company said today the expansion of this network of warehouses is allowing it to add services like Sunday delivery and giving customers more choices about when their packages are delivered.

"We're excited to be creating 80,000 seasonal jobs, thousands of which will lead to regular, full-time roles with benefits starting on day one and innovative programs like Career Choice for employees to further pursue their education," said Mike Roth, Amazon's vice president of North America operations, in the press release.

Indeed, the company said in the past, 10,000 season employees have gone on to become full-time.
