The Federal Aviation Administration has plans to launch a mobile app that will tell you where you can and cannot fly a drone.
The administration says it will launch an iOS app, called B4UFLY, to roughly 1,000 beta testers this summer and expects to release a version for Android later this year. B4UFLY is aimed at teaching hobbyists when and where it's safe to fly unmanned aerial vehicles.
"Longtime members of the unmanned aircraft community may already know the answer to that question. Someone who got their first unmanned aircraft as a gift under the Christmas tree probably doesn’t," a spokesperson for the FAA said in a statement.
This is the FAA's latest initiative to develop guidelines for consumer and commercial drones. Earlier today, the administration announced a new research project focused on understanding how drones can be used to assist news gathering, agriculture, and railroad operations.
