Reports that Microsoft is making a bid for Salesforce may have been premature.

According to a story from Reuters today, sources at Microsoft said the company is "not weighing an offer for Salesforce.com." Though that could change in the long run, right now, the company considers Salesforce to be too expensive, according to Reuters' sources.

Reuters cited "two people familiar with the matter." The report contradicts a story from Bloomberg earlier this week that indicated Microsoft was a likely bidder.

That would seem to leave Oracle as the best remaining possibility. With the notion that the database giant is behind on the cloud, and the possibility that Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff could be a future candidate to run Oracle, the combination would be intriguing.
