The French wearables company Withings has added a novel new feature to its Activité and Activité Pop watches — the ability to automatically detect when the wearer is swimming.

After the devices have determined the swimming motions, they track the exercise accordingly. The swimming session is logged into Withings’s free Health Mate application, which tracks how long the wearer has been swimming and how many calories they’ve burned.

Withings says the new features are just the start of its foray into swimming. The company says it plans to add lap tracking and distance in the near future.

Withings also makes the Withings Pulse activity tracker, the Smart Body Analyzer scale, the Wireless Blood Pressure Monitor, and the Withings Aura sleep monitor. All of these devices report data to the Withings Health Mate app, which also provides coaching and motivation tools.
