Glam, the fast growing content and ad network for women, has hired away Josh Jacobs, a top advertising executive from Yahoo.
The move is significant because Jacobs was Yahoo’s top executive for online display advertising. Yahoo is the biggest player in display advertising, a category that includes things like banner and other ads that populate most commercial web sites including VentureBeat. However, Yahoo has struggled lately because of its lack of focus and the emergence of a range of new competitors that include the venture-capital backed Glam. Those sites have targeted specific niches. Glam has catered to advertisers from the women’s lifestyle, fashion and beauty industries, and now boasts that it is the largest advertiser in that industry by reach. Glam will see its revenue grow about 50 this year, according to our sources. That compares to annual declines of display revenue of 15 percent at Yahoo.
Jacobs becomes senior vice president of brand advertising products & marketing. He becomes Glam’s second SVP, and is one of the company’s biggest hires to date. At Yahoo, Jacobs served as VP and general manager of marketing technology. He was also head of strategy and marketing for the Yahoo Publisher Network. At Glam, Jacobs will lead Glam’s brand advertising products and will be responsible for global marketing and communications.
Glam says it now has 113 million monthly users.

Jacobs was responsible for setting Yahoo!’s advertising technology strategy and for driving the marketplace operations supporting the company’s advertising platform business. He is credited with helping advance the vision of the Right Media Exchange as a vibrant and open marketplace for digital advertising. Prior to this, Jacobs led strategy, operations and marketing for the Yahoo! Publisher Network, where he played a key role in establishing Yahoo! as the partner of choice for publishers by building a network of premium partners and comprehensive display, search and retargeting advertising solutions. At Yahoo!, he led the efforts to deliver the first publisher network solutions based on audience re-targeting. Prior to Yahoo!, Jacobs was president of privately held software company X1 and was in several early internet media startups.
At Glam, Jacobs will report to Jack Rotolo, who was recently appointed to President of Glam Media North America, and will be part of the global executive team led by chief executive Samir Arora.
