Google today added a new feature to Google+: pinned posts. You can now choose to pin one of your posts to the top of your profile or page.

As you’d expect, a pinned post is shown above all your other posts when someone visits your profile or page. You can only pin one post, and it will be marked with a green pin in the top-right corner:

“People often have posts that they want to make sure get seen when someone visits their profile, like a great nature shot from a recent family trip,” Google engineer Dennis Troper explains. “Businesses also have content they want to highlight such as photos of a new product or a trailer for an upcoming movie.”

The only requirement for pinning a post is that it has to be set to public (private posts unsurprisingly can’t be pinned). To use the feature, click on the downward-facing arrow in the top-right corner of the post you want to highlight, and choose “Pin post”:

Troper says the feature is visible to users in desktop browsers and in the Google+ app for Android. iOS users will be seeing pinned posts “soon.” The company didn’t specify when the option to pin posts, not just see pinned posts, would be coming to mobile.

We were feeling a little meta so we decided to check if we could pin the Google+ post for this article. And Voilà:

It’s worth noting that Facebook has let users pin posts, but only on Pages, for years. Twitter first began offering the option to pin tweets to the top of profiles back in April. The feature was used quite a bit when it first arrived, but now it’s rare to see Twitter users regularly change their pinned posts.

Nonetheless, Google+ clearly felt pressured to follow suit.
