Villi Iltchev, the person Box hired in mid-2014 to head up corporate development ahead of its initial public offering, has left the company. He's joined the venture world -- as a general partner at August Capital.

Iltchev's last day at Box was April 28. His responsibilities will remain under the organization of Jeetu Patel, Box's chief strategy officer and senior vice president of platform, but the company has not yet announced Iltchev's replacement. Iltchev begins at August Capital, coincidentally, in August.

On Iltchev's watch Box acquired Verold, Subspace, and MedXT. Before joining Box, where he was senior vice president of strategy and corporate development, Iltchev worked on corporate development and strategy at Salesforce, LifeLock, and HP.

"In both of those positions [at Box and Salesforce], Villi was given the mandate to explore a broad range of technology companies, investing in some and acquiring others. That experience served as the perfect precursor to the venture business," August Capital general partner David Hornik wrote in a blog post.

Based in Menlo Park, California, August Capital has invested in both consumer and enterprise companies, including Fastly, Mirantis, Paperless Post, and Zulily. Last year the firm raised a $450 million fund.

Iltchev himself has made some investments. He's backed Airtable and Gusto, among others, according to his AngelList profile.
