Real-time search engine Collecta said that it raised $4.7 million from Dace and True Ventures today.
The company will use the new funds to hire more talent and add content distribution partnerships. It comes on top of the nearly $2 million Collecta raised last year. Interestingly, the company is moving down to Los Angeles from Silicon Valley to tap into the rich ecosystem of media and content companies there.
Collecta is a search engine that displays the latest tweets, status updates or pieces of content published on any topic. It feeds in data from sources like MySpace, Flickr and Reuters and distributes its search results through widgets and different application programming interfaces that can appear on media sites like CNET.
The company launched last summer amid a frenzy about real-time search, just as Twitter was becoming a definitive source for news happening now. Microsoft, Google and Facebook eventually created their own takes on the hot market, crowding out many smaller, independent startups vying for attention.
Collecta started broadening out its distribution, understanding that standalone sites like its homepage would probably not fare well against the bigger search giants. Today's funding looks like another step in that direction.
