Gear6, a Mountain View, Calif., company that makes centralized storage caching equipment.

Gear6 has raised $10 million in second-round financing from Horizon Ventures, US Venture Partners and InterWest Partners.

The company makes a line of CACHEfx caching appliances which are expandable as more storage is added.  The equipment is used in data centers as a cost-effective way to improve performance and cut overall storage costs. Too often the two-way communication to storage devices is a bottleneck in a data center. Customers using such solutions include enterprises that are embracing virtualization technologies.

Gear6 recently announced that Sony Pictures Imageworks used its equipment to accelerate its image-rendering applications.
