Facebook on 'lockdown' as it prepares for war with Google

Updated

It looks like Google isn’t the only one gearing up for a social network battle.

Rumors surfaced in June that the search giant was developing a Facebook competitor called Google Me, and the company’s social networking ambitions became even more certain this week with its acquisition of social app maker Slide. TechCrunch has called Google’s efforts a war on Facebook, and said Vice President of Engineering Vic Gundotra is the company’s general.

Now we’ve heard from a source close to Facebook’s plans that the social network is working hard to fend off Google. Specifically, chief executive Mark Zuckerberg has declared that the company is on “lockdown” for the next 60 days, with the office open on weekends as the company tries to revamp Photos, Groups, and Events in advance of the Google launch. We hear Zuckerberg even has a neon sign saying “Lockdown” on his office door.

The phrase is a callback to Facebook’s early days, as described in David Kirkpatrick’s book The Facebook Effect. During a lockdown, if someone wanted to leave the office Zuckerberg would reportedly pound the table and say: “‘No! We’re in lockdown! No one leaves the table until we’re done with this thing.”

I’ve contacted Facebook for comment and will update if I hear back.

Update: A Facebook spokesman sent me the following statement.

Our focus is always on improving our products and creating new ways for people to connect and share information. We’re not going to engage in rumors about our future plans.

Update 2: Zuckerberg has confirmed that the company was in lockdown.

The market needs competition from wherever it can get it but not likely to come from another 'me, too' service from Google or anyone else. It's time for the SV innovation engine to cook up another 'next big thing' platform for the world's online denizens to spend their precious time.

Facebook trying to defend against Google? HA! Google will swat them like a pimple on a gnats ass.

Haha, seriously? Facebook has it's work cut out for it then. Trying to beat Google is like shooting Godzilla with a BB gun. Anyway, GOOD LUCK FACEBOOK! As much as I hate you guys, keep up the good fight!

Facebook won't need to worry about google due to the new deal with verizon. I can guarantee ( myself for one ) would never consider verizon also would stop using google and close my account if they attempt to close the deal on “network neutrality” (who are those two companies to speak on behalf for the world) which would affect access to the full internet. Shooting yourself in the foot prior to “war” would be ignorant of them. But who am i to speak since im only one person….LOLAnother scam by the crops. to liquidate our money in fees….

Basically, what Zuckerbee did was turn the whole world into a dormitory hall. It will remain for the next generation to change the paradigm, presumably a generation of non-college bound geeksters (think online learning networkers) to come up with the next big thing. Simply using the same stale, over-saturated paradigm again just won't cut it. Facebombing will get old. Tweeting will get old. People really aren't THAT interesting, for Chrissakes. Google's best bet is to anticipate this new generation of kids turned off by all the face porking, and look for new connections. Given their muscle, Google can get some short run traction empowering consumer devices with social connectivity. So that I can mow my lawn and my lawnmower is talking to Dave's lawnmower a couple of backyards over about what else? lawn conditions. Sally can see what Mary's toaster is up to before she make her family those egg waffle thingies. Bill can get an update on Jeffrey's toilet situation if his own paper gets low (he can still face bomb or tweeterize him from the commode!) or to find out what kind of laxative he is using. If Martha is short a few forks for an upcoming party, Suzy down the street can help her out the moment her silverware drawer starts pinging her. Run, Suzy! Since the external world is talking so much already, including geo-spatially, the internal space will be the next play ground, at least until the next generation figures out how to connect everyone's brains with a soda straw.

Google is Borg. Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated into the collective.

I have deleted my Facebook page several times and they keep reviving it. Already checking out Google Buzz. The winner of this war will not be the one refusing to allow people anonymity and violating their privacy.

Wave was not design to be a social tool, it was design as a collaboration tool.

This is the perfect setup for another Google FAIL.Google does EFFICIENCY and PRODUCTIVITY.Facebook does FUN and RECREATION.Neither company is well suited to force the other out of their respective market!

Its a very nice thing for Mark. I believe with his plans he will soon become the next Bill Gates or might even put his name on the first ranking of the richest person in the whole world. I'd like to hear more updates regarding this issue. I'm really interested =)
