Influential German designer Erik Spiekermann just noticed something interesting about Airbnb’s new logo.

In some ways, this curvy letter A resembles the A logo of an 11-year-old IT automation company called Automation Anywhere.

Spiekermann tweeted about his observation and incited plenty of commentary.

Airbnb and Automation Anywhere sent this joint statement to VentureBeat:

In early 2014 both Airbnb and Automation Anywhere began use of new logos that, by coincidence, have similar designs. Airbnb and Automation Anywhere are working cooperatively to address this issue, and Automation Anywhere is in the process of transitioning to a new logo design that is not similar to the Airbnb logo.

The company unveiled a whole new look today, reflecting its plans to grow and add services.

I do not like the logo, a logo should not have a complex story in my book, I think they will change it again, soon

So did AA (Im guessing they cant go down this route either) have the design for 11 years, did both of them come up with it at the same time or did Airbnb flash $'s to cover up their embarrassment?

AA's logo is a few months old, according to Airbnb

Nobody infringed! Inevitably if you look at enough logos using the letter "A", you're going to find one that looks alike. There are only so many ways to make an "A".

Maybe after 11 years it was easy for them to want to change it

It is awesome that Automation Anywhere is using this as an opportunity to get some PR. Good for them!

Why does the company who's had it for 11 yrs have to update their logo? Shouldn't airbnb be the one to change their logo again since they're the one who infringed?

The quote from the press release says that AA just started using their logo this year.  So they are changing something that is brand new to them as well and no doubt being compensated heftily for it.

If they made a trademark of their logo then they have strong point to protect their brand but if they didn't then also they can show the proof into legal system that for how many years they're using this logo and on that bases AA can  object to this new logo or can demand money from Airbnb

They are 'working cooperatively to address the issue' = money changed hands.

Plus 11 years might be a good point to change the branding a bit, if current one doesn't have a huge equality.
