Nor1, a software platform that allows some travelers to upgrade hotel rooms, airlines tickets, etc. for free, has raised the bulk of an $8.1 million round of equity, according to a regulatory filing. The Cupertino, Calif. company’s lead product, eStandBy Upgrade, is used by the actual hotels, airlines and other services. It detects when premium inventory is available and offers their customers discounted or free upgrades when possible.

Nor1 says that its clients can up their revenue by discounting inventory that would otherwise go unsold, or at least engender customer satisfaction by giving it away for free. Nor1 also provides the upgrade offer web pages, using photos taken from the particular hotels and keeping its client’s branding consistent.
