Xobni, a plugin that gives users more social context in their emails, is coming to BlackBerry smartphones today with the launch of two new services — Xobni Mobile and Xobni One.
Both services seem like smart moves for the company. There’s the simple fact that as mobile email usage grows, smartphone support is becoming more of a necessity for any email service. While most startups seem to focus on the iPhone, the BlackBerry may be a better fit for Xobni’s business audience.
The other issue is that until now, Xobni has been an Outlook-only product. That’s a risk as Microsoft adds Xobni-like features into Outlook itself, such as the ability to view the Facebook and MySpace accounts of your contacts as you’re writing an email. Moves like this combat that risk, by both adding new features and also moving Xobni beyond the Outlook userbase.
Specifically, Xobni Mobile works with the native email application on the BlackBerry. When you’re composing an email, you can “flick up” on the device’s trackpad to bring up Facebook profiles, recent communication with that contact, your shared network, and more. The Xobni One service, meanwhile, synchronizes your Outlook contacts with your contacts on the BlackBerry.
On its own, Xobni Mobile costs $9.99 to download. As a package, Xobni Mobile and Xobni cost $6.99 to download and $3.99 per month.
Xobni has raised more than $14 million from incubator Y Combinator, Khosla Ventures, Cisco Systems, First Round Capital, Baseline Ventures, Atomico Investments, BlackBerry Partners Fund, and others.
