Enterprise software company Citrix has bought ScaleXtreme, a company with software for managing applications running in multiple cloud environments.
Citrix mentioned the deal yesterday at the tail end of a blog post.
ScaleXtreme will stop providing its current service to its customers, and it’s no longer accepting registrations for prospective customers, according to the company’s website.
ScaleXtreme offered multi-cloud management software as well as tools for server and application monitoring. It could keep an eye out for server software and security patches.
Citrix decided to buy ScaleXtreme “to accelerate deliver[y] of services automation capabilities within Workspace Services,” according to the Citrix blog post. Citrix announced Workspace Services yesterday as a tool for securely making applications and data available to employees on any device they choose.
“Our first focus is to leverage the ScaleXtreme technology assets to cloudify* and manage the lifecycle of Citrix workloads,” a Citrix spokesperson wrote in an email to VentureBeat. “Once this is complete, these assets will help us deliver a more comprehensive cloud management platform.”

Cloud management has been an increasingly important as companies strive to build out multi-cloud environments, as different applications have different performance, security, and agility needs. Such capability could help companies ensure their applications are being served up to users the way they’re supposed to be.
Competitors in the cloud management market include RightScale, Dell’s Enstratius, Cliqr, Scalr, and ServiceMesh.
Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.
ScaleXtreme started in 2010 and was based in San Mateo, Calif. It raised an $11 million round from Ignition Partners and Accel Partners in 2011. It had fewer than 12 full-time employees, the Citrix spokesman wrote.
On its LinkedIn page, ScaleXtreme claims its customer list included “category-leading global 500 enterprises, running mission-critical applications managed by ScaleXtreme.”
