Email’s demise may have been greatly exaggerated — certainly if SendGrid’s efforts are anything to go by.

The email delivery platform has lifted the lid on its first native app for mobile, kicking off this week on iPhone. It serves its users with real-time access to their SendGrid account. Today’s news comes a little more than two months after the Boulder, Colorado-based startup announced a $21 million funding round, taking its total amount raised to $48 million.

Founded in 2009, SendGrid has built an impressive arsenal of customers, and counts the likes of Airbnb, Pandora, Spotify, Uber, LinkedIn, and FourSquare among its clients. SendGrid provides the infrastructure for companies to better manage their transactional email initiatives, covering aspects such as shipping notifications, newsletters, and sign-up confirmations.

screen322x572With a dedicated iPhone app now in tow, SendGrid users will be able to track email performance stats, including clicks, opens, activity logs, spam filtering, unsubscribes, and “bounces.”

Last year, we reported that SendGrid had sent out almost as many emails as McDonald’s had sold burgers. A year on from that, SendGrid reports that it has sent more than 300 billion emails since launch, equating to an average of 435 million emails per day, or 15 billion emails per month.

Though Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp, and a myriad of alternative messaging conduits have sprung up and put a dent in email, it seems that email remains in rude health within the business realm. Indeed, just last week, Message Systems acquired Port25 Solutions to create something of a behemoth in the email infrastructure space.

“Email will remain the standard for online B2B and B2C communication,” CEO Sameer Dholakia told VentureBeat in December, “despite the rise in person-to-person messaging alternatives.”
