Why remembering isn’t enough
Every AI memory product ships the same pitch: your AI remembers things across conversations. The infrastructure for this, embeddings, vector databases, and semantic search, works, but it has been commoditized. Personal memory is solved. Remembering your name, your preferences, your project notes: the industry has figured that out.
The unsolved problem is institutional knowledge: what your team built, the decisions you made, the reasoning behind them. That context exists as a trace in the minds of the people who lived through it and in the AI platforms they used. When they leave or switch tools, it can disappear.
And remembering isn't knowing. When facts change, when you change your mind, when something stops being true, when the AI's own inference was wrong in the first place, current systems have no way to handle it.
A team member relocates from New York to San Francisco and mentions it once. The system updates the location. But it does not catch that "commutes via the L train" and "prefers meetings before East Coast close" are now stale too. Those facts were true because that person lived in New York. Now they are quietly wrong, and the system has no idea they are connected.
A planning agent infers from a competitor analysis that your team is "prioritizing enterprise sales." No one said this. The analysis was exploratory, not directional. When a belief changes, the system performs one of three operations: it adds a new belief, it replaces an old one while preserving the history, or it retracts a belief entirely, a distinct operation, not a hack of the other two. Over time, this can lead to memory that becomes more structured and reliable, rather than increasingly noisy. Over months, the system's model of your work converges on accuracy, which is the opposite of conventional systems, drifting further from reality the longer they run.
