As collectors and institutions embrace digital art, the question of how it should be experienced comes into focus.
Digital art has stepped out of the future and arrived as a legitimate category for art collectors – showing up with increasing frequency on the walls, hard drives, and balance sheets of museums, galleries, and their clients. According to a recent survey of global collecting, digital art now ranks third in total spending among high-net-worth collectors, after painting and sculpture. More than half of respondents purchased digital artwork in 2024 or 2025, and the average share of digital art in collections jumped from 3% in 2024 to 13% in 2025.
Born in the 1960s alongside the first personal computers, and experiencing peaks of hype during the NFT boom and subsequent market correction, digital art is finally achieving mainstream acceptance. But as the medium matures, a fundamental question has emerged: how should it be displayed?
Painting and sculpture have centuries of established standards for framing, lighting, and presentation. Digital art — a medium that can be generative, time-based, interactive, and computationally complex — has been displayed on everything from cheap monitors to repurposed televisions, with wildly inconsistent results. The gap between what artists create and how collectors experience their work has only widened. Recent exhibitions bear this out, as exemplified by the shows “Electric Dreams: Art and Technology Before the Internet” and “Infinite Images: The Art of Algorithms.”
But institutional acceptance has revealed a technical problem: most displays simply aren’t built for digital art. Consider generative art, where algorithms create ever-evolving visual compositions that change throughout the day. These works aren’t static images—they’re living systems that demand computational power, color accuracy, and visual fidelity that consumer displays cannot consistently provide.
Angelo Sotiracopoulos, founder of DeviantArt and creator of Layer, a digital art platform and display system, recognized this gap. “No display existed that could present digital art with the fidelity and presence it deserved,” he explains. This led to the development of Layer Canvas, a proprietary display built specifically for fine art, and Layer Grade, a comprehensive technical standard for museum-quality digital art display.

The standard addresses multiple dimensions of visual quality. It calls for a range of specifications, from a state-of-the-art color spectrum, to premium anti-glare treatments, consistent color accuracy and brightness, an on-board GPU capable of rendering complex systems, real-time motion, and high-resolution visuals, and native storage guaranteeing reliability without dependence on constant network access.
Whether these specifications will become an industry standard remains to be seen, but the effort reflects a broader development in how digital art is being taken seriously by the art establishment. As a living standard that will be updated annually to reflect evolving technology and artistic practice, it acknowledges that the medium’s requirements will continue to change.
For a new generation of collectors, these standards matter. For many in Gen Z, the screen is not a window but a home; they have grown up immersed in digital culture, constantly creating, sharing, and remixing images and ideas online.
The question is no longer whether digital art deserves a place in the art world, but whether the infrastructure exists to support it properly. Layer Grade suggests the industry is finally taking that responsibility seriously — even if it took decades to get here.
