Enterprise teams are moving fast to deploy AI agents. What started as internal copilots has quickly turned into autonomous systems that retrieve data, trigger actions, and interact with other tools without waiting for a human prompt.

For the engineers and operators building these systems, the speed is exhilarating. For the security teams tasked with governing them, it’s quietly terrifying.

Across large organizations, agents are now embedded in engineering workflows, finance operations, customer support, and data pipelines. They’re often built quickly by small teams under pressure to deliver results, each making reasonable assumptions about access and trust in isolation. Over time, those assumptions collide.

When AI agents start showing up everywhere

AI agents are no longer confined to a single product team or experimental sandbox. They appear wherever there is a repetitive task, a data dependency, or a workflow that can be automated. One team builds an agent to query internal dashboards. Another deploys an agent that takes action across SaaS tools. A third chains agents together so one agent invokes another downstream.

What emerges is something many enterprise operators now recognize immediately: agent sprawl.

Most enterprise identity systems were built for a simpler world: humans log in, applications authenticate, permissions remain relatively static, and ownership is clear. Autonomous agents violate all of those assumptions. They act continuously, invoke other agents, and operate across systems and time without a human in the loop.

To keep momentum, teams improvise. OAuth flows are stretched beyond their original intent. Long-lived credentials are embedded into workflows because there’s no better option. Authentication logic gets rebuilt inside each agent, slightly differently every time.

The result is a growing blind spot. As agents multiply and interact, it becomes harder to reason about access, revoke permissions safely, or explain what happened when something goes wrong.

Why security teams feel blind

Security leaders feel the impact first. Audit trails fragment. Permissions become inconsistent across teams. No one can confidently say whether an agent has more access than it should, or whether it’s still running long after its original owner has moved on.

Engineering teams feel it too, though in a different way. Every new agent introduces friction instead of leverage. What should accelerate development starts to slow it down when teams hesitate to deploy systems they don’t fully understand or can’t confidently control.

Without clear governance, agents stop feeling like an advantage and start feeling like a risk.

When speed turns into risk

Enterprises have been here before. SaaS sprawl and cloud sprawl followed similar patterns: rapid adoption, fragmented ownership, and security models that lagged reality.

Agent sprawl is different mainly in speed and scope. Autonomous agents can touch more systems, act more quickly, and create larger blast radii when something goes wrong. The window to “fix it later” is much smaller.

The lesson from those earlier cycles is clear. Security cannot be bolted on after the fact or reinvented by each team. It has to be infrastructure.

Rethinking identity for autonomous systems

That realization is driving the emergence of agent-native identity. Instead of forcing agents into identity frameworks built for humans or traditional applications, agent-native systems treat agents as first-class entities.

Each agent has its own identity, its own permissions, and a clear audit trail. Access is defined centrally and enforced consistently, even as agents call other agents or operate across tools.
