Staples has confirmed that it has launched a probe to determine whether its payment card system had been breached.
The U.S. retailer revealed the investigation following a report by security reporter Brian Krebs that appeared yesterday saying that several banks had detected possible payment card fraud at Staples.
The office-supply company becomes the latest major retailer to grapple with the escalating attacks on payment card systems in the U.S. There's no word yet on the size of the breach at Staples.
A Staples spokesman told Krebs the company is looking into the issue and that it has contacted law enforcement.
“We take the protection of customer information very seriously, and are working to resolve the situation,” company spokesman Mark Cautela told KrebsonSecurity. “If Staples discovers an issue, it is important to note that customers are not responsible for any fraudulent activity on their credit cards that is reported on [in] a timely basis.”
