When General Motors’ tech team mapped its major engineering workflows to identify and minimize latency, they realized what many enterprises are coming to understand.

Software ecosystems optimized for human operators cause friction for AI agents, impeding their ability to execute tasks and make decisions autonomously.

So GM’s technology team began retooling, opening up APIs for direct agent access and building customized Model Context Protocols (MCPs) for both industry tools and GM’s custom applications to reduce friction for agentic interaction, said Rashed Haq, VP of autonomous vehicles at GM, during a call to prepare for his session at VentureBeat’s VB Transform 2026 conference. 

Their infrastructure allows agents to interact across tools seamlessly, without requiring context switching, he said. 

The operational backbone of this effort is a three-layer control plane designed to ensure efficient task execution: an orchestration layer handled by an LLM that understands the business, a second layer of task-specific LLMs, and an MCP layer that facilitates interaction with tools and data. 

The early results of this implementation, roughly a year and a half into the program, demonstrate significant efficiency gains. The new architecture has driven a 300% increase in merged pull requests, turning agents into force-multipliers for GM engineers.
